Epblogs verdict

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is an excellent portable SSD, capable of offering a good level of performance and endurance, for a more than balanced price. Water resistance isn’t the best, and the included cable could be longer. Overall, the best product in its class.

The Sandisk Extreme is now a benchmark in the world of archiving. It is a product full of advantages and virtually flawless, except perhaps a slightly higher price than the competitors. But it’s worth it.

SanDisk Extreme, price and availability

The SanDisk Extreme is available on the Sandisk website and at major online retailers. It costs € 109.99 for the 500TB version. It then rises to € 179.99, € 359.99 and € 749.99, respectively for the 1, 2 and 4 terabyte versions.

SanDisk Extreme V2 has a very very compact design. It is an object that fits comfortably in your pocket (it measures only 8.95mm x 52.42mm x 100.54mm, and weighs a few tens of grams). Adding it to your daily supply will not pose any problem, because basically you will forget you have it, for what it weighs.

To top it off, there is also a rigid loop to which a carabiner can be attached. So you can clip it inside a backpack, camera bag, or wherever you find it convenient.

Unfortunately, there is no carabiner in the package, so you will have to get one separately. Another small shortcoming is the Thunderbolt cable included in the package: it guarantees the maximum possible speed (up to 1000 MB / s), but is less than 20 cm long, a little more if you include the USB-C – USB- adapter. TO. A slightly longer cable would have been preferable, just to have a little more freedom of action when working on the go. If nothing else, since the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is so light, it won’t be a problem if you find it “hanging” on the cable itself. It will just be a bad thing to see.

Small but tough: The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD resists water and dust infiltration. And it also resists any drops, thanks to a recycled aluminum chassis, complemented by an additional rubber protection. However, it is an IP55 certification, so we are talking about a limited resistance to water and dust. An occasional squirt won’t be a problem, but if you drop it and stay immersed for a long time, it could be. From this point of view, perhaps, one of those rubber flaps covering the USB-C port would have helped.

Speaking of rest assured, it is worth adding that Sandisk offers a full 5 year warranty on this product. One aspect that alone could make the SanDisk Extreme V2 preferable over its competitors.

We tested the SanDisk Extreme V2 in the 500TB version. It also exists from 1, 2 and 4 TB. All variants have the same specifications: up to 1050 MB / s read, and up to 1,000 MB / s read.

Our tests confirm the specification values. With Crystaldiskmark we have reached values close to the theoretical maximum ones, while with DiskBench we have obtained a speed of around 430 MB / s (non-sequential writing) and 860 MB / s (non-sequential reading).

In other words, SanDisk Extreme V2 is a lightning-fast external SSD. Whatever your business, you can count on a very high transfer speed, which will allow you to move files in the blink of an eye. And, if necessary, you can also work directly with this external drive: compared to the faster internal SSDs you will have less speed, even much less, but it will still be possible to do all the work, which is sometimes all that is needed.

In any case, this SanDisk Extreme V2 is not the fastest among external SSDs. That’s a first held by other models, including the SanDisk Extreme Pro V2 “big brother”, which offers double transfer speeds, up to 2,000MB / s.

A separate note on the Sandisk Security software, which can be installed immediately because the executable is already on the drive. Using it, you can apply 256-bit encryption in an instant: just choose the password and click ok. Be careful though, because if you forget the password you will no longer be able to recover data from your external SSD.

The SanDisk Extreme V2 is an external SSD with excellent performance, encapsulated in a durable chassis and available at reasonable prices. Overall, it is the external SSD that offers the best balance, and it is the most advisable even in comparison with products that cost slightly less for the same capacity.
