With a balanced soundscape, superb build quality, and an intuitive design, the Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones are a fantastic bone conduction headphone option at a low price.
The Shokz OpenRun Pro and Shokz OpenRun, the two top-selling running headphones on the market, should not be overlooked in favor of the Haylou PurFree BC01. They were made for jogging and exercise, just like all other instances of the niche, which accounts for their water-resistant construction and behind-the-head strap made of soft but non-slippery silicon that doesn’t move around much while in touch with skin (or hair).
They are somewhat larger than their competitors, but for practical purposes, there is essentially no difference. With a battery life of more than eight hours, they can compete with some of the greatest bone conduction headphones. They produce a well-balanced soundstage, are simple to link with Bluetooth devices, and stay in place while workout.
While some cheaper rivals supply a boomy, bass-heavy sound that sends ticklish vibrations down cheekbones, the soundage on the Haylou PurFree BC01 is balanced and easily bold enough for use while out and about. Audiophile quality this is not, but the treble detail and balanced bass on offer here is at least the equal of much pricer bone conduction headphones.
Our main issues are that it has a proprietary charging cord, which is typical for bone conductions items, and that there are no physical buttons, so you have to master a few double- and triple-tap techniques to manage the playing of songs and music. Nothing, however, can change our positive thoughts of the Haylou PurFree BC01, which we believe to be the greatest bone conduction headphones overall.
Haylou PurFree BC01 bone Price and release date
- US$85 (UK£72/AU$125)
- Available now
The Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones were introduced in mid-2022 and are available for a variety of costs, most of which are inexpensive due to initial offers. The typical price is roughly US$85/UK£72/AU$125, but if you look about, you can usually get it for about 25% less.
Haylou PurFree BC01 bone Design
- Open-ear design
- Weighs 28g
- Proprietary magnetic charging cable
The Shokz OpenRun Pro, Shokz OpenRun, and Mojawa Mojo1 all resemble the Haylou PurFree BC01 in appearance nearly exactly. It contains two ear hooks to keep the ears in place, two transducers that vibrate the cheekbones, and two compartments for the electronics behind the ears.
The back of the wearer’s head is covered by a flexible headband. The design of the delightfully titled multi-function button of the Haylou Purfree BC01, however, differs only slightly (MFB). Like with other bone conduction headphones, it can be used to pause music—most likely so you can cross the street safely or have a conversation—but in this case, it also manages music playback and activates a voice assistant.
Other than that the Haylou Purfree BC01 – although designed much like any other bone conduction headphones – certainly has the ideal combination of stability and strength. The build quality overall is excellent despite them weighing just 28g.
In fact, our only complaint is that the Haylou Purfree BC01 uses a proprietary charging cable. It’s black and it measures 60cm long, with a USB 2.0 terminator on one end and a two-pronged magnetic connector on the other. It’s almost identical to the one used by the Shokz OpenRun and Shokz OpenRun Pro.
The Haylou Purfree BC01 only differs in that its battery and circuitry are a little bit bigger. In any case, we do wish that the Haylou Purfree BC01 had innovated away from relying on a specialized charging cord. They are simple to lose and make using the headphones while traveling uncomfortable.
Unproprietary charging cords should not be used unless a pair of bone conduction headphones is specifically made for swimming. They are, of course, more sweat-proof than a USB-C slot, which can have water and dirt in it. In our opinion, they ought to additionally include some sort of container that will safeguard them when placed in, say, a gym bag or a backpack.

Haylou PurFree BC01 bone Performance
- Excellent sound quality
- Balanced soundstage
- Slightly confusing controls
Not simply because they are promoting a song, the Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones are amazing. We tested it out while it was running with a variety of content types and had the same fantastic results.
Although the treble highs are slightly chopped, there is still enough detail to satisfy all but the pickiest music lovers. With adequate low-frequency activity in the background, it is also well-balanced. The Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones avoid the strange side effect of buzzy vibrations “ticking” the wearer’s cheekbones since they don’t exaggerate the bass, in contrast to many other bone conduction headphones.
That holds true even when the Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones are worn at their maximum level, which we found to be just loud enough for an urban run (although the open-ear design makes it difficult to hear anything if you’re on an extremely busy road).
We understand the need for a sweat-proof headset with a focus on cleanliness, but this results in a heavy burden on the Haylou PurFree BC01 bone conduction headphones’ limited tactile buttons. Or, more precisely, it is the wearer who controls the music because a variety of double and triple pushes must be learnt. Although triple-clicking the MFB button to go back a track isn’t really obvious, it’s actually not that difficult to perform.
Performance score: 4/5
Haylou PurFree BC01 bone Features
- Bluetooth 5.2
- Connects to voice assistants
- IP67 waterproof
The Haylou Purfree BC01 offers all the features you could ask for in a set of bone conduction headphones and even hints at a few more. The Haylou Purfree BC01’s ability to link with two Bluetooth devices at once is what makes it most intriguing. At least that is what the package states. We were unable to achieve this in practice since the Haylou Purfree BC01 only supports a single Bluetooth connection at a time.
Aside from jogging and exercises, the Haylou Purfree BC01 also has dual-mic noise cancellation for hands-free calls, making it an ideal choice for usage in a home office and while traveling. A lengthy push of that button on the transducer can also activate Siri or Google Assistant.
The Haylou Purfree BC01’s 165mAh Li-ion polymer battery requires 90 minutes to completely charge, but there is a helpful quick-charging option that provides two hours of battery life in only 10 minutes.
Features score: 3/5
Haylou PurFree BC01 bone value for money
- Great value compared to the competition
- Very slightly larger physical size
Value for money score: 5/5
The Haylou PurFree BC01 must be viewed as a wonderful deal when compared to the industry leaders, the Shokz OpenRun Pro and Shokz OpenRun. Although they are a tiny bit bigger, they only weigh a few grams.
They are practically identical in terms of construction, power, and sound quality (and the Haylou PurFree BC01 actually uses a slightly newer Qualcomm chipset and Bluetooth 5.2 instead Bluetooth 5.1).
