Epblogs verdict

On paper, Easy PDF sounds fantastic—a service that lets you convert between formats from any device. Sadly, there were much too many bugs, and the service frequently fell short of expectations.

Quick Summary

Its purpose is to help you convert files to and from the PDF format. There are also tools for merging PDFs together, and even converting scanned PDFs to searchable text via Optical Character Recognition.

That’s quite a lot of functionality, and perhaps best of all, this is a free service – although you do have to wonder how they make their money.

Easy PDF review: Interface

  • Easy web access
  • Simple navigation through clean interface

You use a web browser to access the service on any device you own. Once there, you’ll notice that the user interface is really basic. 15 icons are presented to you, arranged in rows and columns and adjusted to fit the size of your screen.

How this works is easy: start by selecting the tool you wish to use.

You can convert documents to various other file formats, such as PDF to Word, PDF to Powerpoint, PDF to Excel, and PDF to AutoCAD. It’s also possible to change file types to Text, JPG, PNG or GIF. Each has their respective icon to click on, so it’s simple to get started.

Doing the reverse is also available, by turning a Word document to PDF, or JPG to PDF. However, your options are much more limited in that direction.

You also have an enticing ‘PDF Creation’ tool, have the ability to split a PDF, or merge PDFs into a single document, there’s a PDF compressor tool, and finally ‘OCR Online’.

So, let’s take a look at some of these tools.

  • Interface score: 5/5

Easy PDF review: PDF Conversion

  • Quick to upload, slow to download
  • Excellent automatic OCR

You are prompted to upload a file after selecting the relevant icon. Drag one directly onto the page from your PC to accomplish this. You can import data via Google Drive or Dropbox as well.

Although the upload happens extremely quickly, the converting process takes some time. It goes without saying that a document’s complexity will affect how long it takes, but even for straightforward files with only a few pages of plain text, there is a definite delay. It takes significantly longer if there is a picture on it or if the layout is complicated.

Once completed, you can download the results, and that’s painfully slow too. It’s also possible to download the finished product back to the two cloud storage services.

We really like the process of converting scanned PDFs to Word. Our scanner only turns the page into an image, but Easy PDF automatically performs an OCR on the page during conversion, turning the image into selectable and editable text. Although it isn’t perfect—no OCR is, in our experience—it is more than adequate.

It’s not flawless, though; there have been times when the conversion failed but we were able to upload the original again and it worked the second time. Sometimes even extremely simple documents failed with no apparent cause.

Easy PDF review: Convert to PDF

  • Can convert JPG and Word to PDF
  • Frequent failures

The JPG to PDF tool performed as anticipated. Every stage of the process is the same as when attempting to convert a PDF into another format; the only difference is that you must choose a different icon at the beginning.

When we tried to use Word to PDF, the service failed. We tried several files. files that are complicated, have columns, graphics, or are just plain text. All of them failed. Each and every one of them.

Could it be that the service was having a poor day? We tried it another go the next day, and this time it was successful. Which indicates that the service is not trustworthy. If you require a file conversion right now, you truly can’t wait a few hours or even a day.

It’s possible that you won’t encounter this when using the service, but knowing how frequently Easy PDF failed when we tried it makes it difficult to recommend.

Easy PDF review: PDF Manipulation

  • Disappointing PDF ‘creation’ tool
  • Other tools regularly failed

We now come to what look like useful tools: ‘PDF Creation’, ‘PDF Split’ and ‘PDF Merge’.

We were eager to explore those, but we were disappointed pretty fast.

Take ‘PDF Creation’ (please, as the old joke goes). We expected to be able to create a PDF, i.e. edit them in some way, so as to differentiate that tool from the other ‘XX to PDF’ icons available.

Instead, this is only a tool to convert any file format—the business claims there are more than 100 file formats—into a PDF. Once you upload it and select “Create PDF,” it will finally be converted.

In essence, it’s just a simplification of the separate tools we previously discussed above because you can’t even upload several files to convert them all at once. Doubtless there is duplication. To simplify the interface, it would probably be simpler to take out the other icons and simply place this one front and center.

‘PDF Split’ sounds interesting: you upload a PDF and split it into separate pages… but it just wouldn’t work for us. The files we tried uploaded fine, but then we waited for the service as it told us it was ‘Loading PDF Preview…’

We waited. And waited. Even a basic 3-page PDF composed of plain text made us wait forever. We went back to it the next day and it was still ‘Loading PDF Preview…’ So, we gave up.

How does “PDF Merge” work? Allowing you to combine many PDFs into a single document sounds like yet another excellent concept. Uploading a lot of files was simple. But it just wasn’t effective. Even very basic plain PDFs could not be combined. Even merging two identical plain document copies was a test we tried. No luck. The message “Merging file failed!” appeared each time.

Let’s finish strong with “OCR Online.” The data from an image can then be converted to a Text, Word, or Excel document. Everything runs on autopilot. As soon as the conversion is complete, your image will be converted into editable text. And for us, that specific service was effective.

Easy PDF review: Terms

  • Opaque terms and conditions
  • Instals cookies on your machine

So, reliability isn’t that great, and if you can’t trust a service, would you even use it regularly?

The terms and conditions are what follow. As with Sejda, which has a secure 2-hour automatic data-wipe option, Easy PDF is anonymous, your connection is secure, and your files are destroyed after 6 hours.

According to Easy PDF, cookies are required for the program to function properly on your device. However, in recent years, we have developed a strong aversion to “free” services. We personally wouldn’t divulge our usernames and passwords for our cloud storage, but perhaps you are a more trusting person.

Easy PDF review: Final Verdict

Uploading files to Simple PDF may be “easy,” but the rest of the site feels haphazard. The service operated occasionally but not always. It advertises endless PDF conversions, which sounds great—if you didn’t have to wait forever for the process to frequently fail, at least in our experience. You should keep in mind that “your mileage may vary.”

The element of trust is another. Can you rely on a free online PDF converter to protect your privacy? “The data your [sic] supply to us will only be utilized for document conversion and website statistics,” they do state. But it’s still unclear exactly what those website metrics are.

If the service worked reliably, it would be easy to recommend despite this.

But sadly, it didn’t. If you own a Mac, you don’t actually need this service as you can convert any file to a PDF straight from the Print command, and PDF manipulation is a synch using the Apple Preview PDF reader and editor app.

We know it’s not that simple on Windows or Linux, but you’ll find plenty of premium PDF editors and free PDF editors that do measure up.
