Disney Plus is giving this box office bomb another chance

Epic fantasy is flavor of the month on streaming services right now, and Disney Plus is hoping to cash in on the popularity of the genre with another live-action TV series.

According to Variety, the streamer is in the early stages of developing a new show based on Christopher Paolini’s well-known novel series The Inheritance Cycle. One of the four books that will serve as the foundation for the Disney Plus production is Eragon, which was previously adapted into a feature film of the same name from 2006.

The story of the legendary Dragon Rider, a fierce warrior tasked with rescuing the country of Alagasia from its evil monarch, is told in The Inheritance Cycle. The story centers on a young farm boy who, after finding a mysterious dragon egg, learns how to become the legendary Dragon Rider.

The movie did have a mightily impressive cast – Jeremy Irons, Rachel Weisz, Robert Carlyle and John Malkovich were among the names on its expensive call sheet – but audiences and reviewers alike were left unimpressed by Eragon’s lackluster writing, messy effects and generally uninspired take on an otherwise intriguing story.

Using the hashtag #EragonRemake in 2021, readers of Paolini’s books expressed their support for a new Eragon and its successors adaptation. Disney, it appears, took note of the interest. The author recently praised these activists by citing a tweet from Variety (see below) that verified the creation of the new series.

There is currently no information available on the release date or cast of Disney’s The Inheritance Cycle show on Disney Plus. But given that it’s still in the “early development” phase, we still have a few years before we get to watch Eragon ride once more.

Is this just fantasy?

There are other fantasy book series being adapted at the moment on Disney Plus besides Eragon (or The Inheritance Cycle). Additionally, the rapidly expanding streaming service is developing a serialized version of Rick Riordan’s well-known Percy Jackson series, which has previously served as the inspiration for two 20th Century Studios motion pictures.

Neither is Eragon the only television program with a dragon theme making news this month. House of the Dragon, an eagerly anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff from HBO, will premiere on August 21. The Rings of Power, an extremely pricey Prime Video series from Amazon, will premiere in September.

As mentioned, Disney’s latest project is certainly not going to fight these upcoming shows for streaming real estate – it’s even possible that both House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power get second seasons before Eragon’s arrival – but Disney Plus bosses are clearly buying into the idea that fantasy fiction sells (even if only on TV…).
